Choosing an HVAC system is more than just searching on Google or going to the appliance store and picking out the one with all the latest bells and whistles.
Finding the right contractor with the most expertise for your needs will ensure the best system is chosen and quality installation is executed, which in turn will get you the best energy efficiency and longer life expectancy from your investment.
Before you choose a contractor, it’s best to do your homework so you understand what is being offered when choosing the components for your HVAC system. Here are some tips, questions and food for thought to get you through this process:
If you don’t already have a trusted HVAC contractor, do your due diligence. Get recommendations. Research expertise and testimonials. Get multiple estimates. Remember, less expensive is not always the winning route.
2. The System
What type of system is right for your space? By all means, refer to your contractor when finalizing the decisions, but make sure you know your options. Some of these options have their pros and cons and possibly permitting and legal challenges as well.
- Do you need gas or electric?
- Single stage, two stage or modulating furnace?
- What size (it’s not all about square footage)?
- Is humidity a factor?
- Radiant heat or forced air?
- Of course, brand of system is important to many due to cost, efficiency and reputation.
3. Ducts or Ductless
In a nutshell, ducts (which come with central air) offers system concealment so all you see are the small vents in each room. The downside to ducts is the possibility for energy loss through faulty ductwork. Ductless systems have close to zero energy loss and assist in zoning capabilities for commercial space, but are much more visible.
4. Updated Technology
Isn’t it great to be able to trust the ol’ tried and true? When there are no bells and whistles, it’s typically fairly priced and you know it works. With technology evolving faster than ever before, not all systems are keeping up with Jones’. Energy efficiency is the NEW technology. It means better for the environment, better for your pocket book, eventually. Though it comes with a higher price tag now, the great ROI means that you pay less on utilities, repairs and replacements in the future.
5. Smart Technology
Smart Technology isn’t just for homes anymore. You can also get remote temperature control for your commercial space. Utilizing these time saving features can also save energy and money. Temperature controls, video monitoring, light controls, and more can be synced with your smart phones. Check it out some great options here.
Just like cars, bbq grills and golf clubs, not all HVAC systems and contractors are created equal. Making an HVAC investment is adding value and efficiency to your property and putting the care and thought into this decision now will save you money and hassle in the long term.
